PMU Aftercare: Caring for Microbladed Brows in Week One
The actual PMU or microblading session is over quickly — but how you care for your brows in the following week has a real effect on how the pigment settles and how close the healed result looks to what you saw right after the appointment. Skipping proper aftercare is one of the most common reasons people end up disappointed with otherwise well-done work.
Days 1–2: right after your session
Your brows will typically look noticeably darker and bolder than you expect immediately after the procedure — this is normal and not a preview of the final color, which will soften significantly as healing progresses. Some mild swelling, redness, or tenderness in the area is also expected in the first day or so.
Keep the area completely dry during this window — no water directly on the brows, no sweating from exercise, and avoid touching the area with unwashed hands.
Days 3–5: the flaking phase
Around day 3, the treated skin typically starts to flake or peel lightly as it heals — this is a normal part of the process, similar to how a light wound heals. It’s genuinely important not to pick, scratch, or manually peel this flaking skin, even though it can be tempting. Doing so can pull out pigment unevenly, leaving patchy spots in the final result.
Apply only the aftercare ointment your technician provided, in the thin layer they instructed — over-applying product can suffocate the healing skin and affect how pigment retains.
Days 6–10: the color fades before it evens out
Many people panic around this stage because the color can look like it’s fading dramatically or patchy — this is a well-documented part of the healing cycle, not a sign that something went wrong. The true final color and shape typically become clear over the following weeks as the skin fully heals underneath.
What to avoid for the full healing period (usually 2–4 weeks)
- Swimming pools, saunas, and steam rooms
- Direct sun exposure on the brow area without protection
- Chemical exfoliants, retinoids, or active skincare ingredients applied near the brows
- Makeup directly on the treated area until fully healed
- Facials, waxing, or other treatments near the brow area
When a touch-up appointment matters
Most PMU and microblading procedures are designed as a two-session process — an initial appointment followed by a touch-up 4–6 weeks later, once healing is complete. This touch-up isn’t a sign anything went wrong; it’s a standard part of how the pigment is refined and any unevenness from the healing process is corrected. Our PMU and permanent makeup page covers what the full process, including touch-ups, typically looks like.
FAQs
Is it normal for my brows to look too dark right after the session?
Yes — initial color always appears more intense and will soften considerably as healing progresses over the following weeks.
What if my brows look patchy during healing?
Uneven fading during the flaking and healing phase is common and is usually addressed at your touch-up appointment rather than being a sign of a failed procedure.
How long until I can wear makeup on my brows again?
Most technicians recommend waiting until the area is fully healed, generally around 2–4 weeks, before applying makeup directly to the treated skin.
